WHAT HAVE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS BEEN SO FAR?
Liam was a keen player of football. He has played since he was 5 and then went on to play for North Coast Football in the youth National Premier League. He loved the game of football so much that he went on to train as a referee. He has then gone on to referee in the community. This year alone in refereeing, Liam has achieved selection into the NNSW football referee TOP camp in June. He then went on to be selected as a referee at the NNSW Champion of Champions referee development camp in October. He not only refereed in this competition, but also played in it with his team.
Liam was awarded referee of the month in May 2019 and then the honour of community referee of the year for North Coast Football for 2019. After such a wonderful recognition of Liam’s skill and commitment to football, he has just been selected to participate in the 2020 NNSW Youth Referee Academy. This will involve travel to Newcastle and frequent training to refine his skills and further develop as an official.
WHY DID YOU APPLY FOR THIS GRANT?
I have applied on Liam’s behalf, as it has been wonderful to see Liam set goals for himself and achieve at a top level. Despite the abuse he has at times faced, it has made him rise up and ensure fair play is occurring. He is community minded, a trait that serves him well on and off the field and eager to always improve. I also feel that It is important to shine the spotlight on the other side of sport, the officials that are needed to ensure we have a game.
HOW WILL THIS GRANT BENEFIT YOU? AND HOW DO YOU PLAN ON USING IT?
This grant will not only encourage Liam to reach for the next level in refereeing, it will also be spent on transport costs to ensure he can travel to Newcastle from Coffs Harbour to participate in the NNSW Youth Referee Academy in 2020. It would be a wonderful assistance in facilitating this next step in referee development for Liam.
WHAT ARE YOU HOPES AND DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE?
Liam hopes to become an international football referee. He absolutely loves the game and dreams of walking on the pitch at Anfield to referee a Liverpool match.
WHO INSPIRES YOU THE MOST?
Liam is inspired by Edson Arantes do Nascimento known as Pele. A player that was humble on and off the field, who also demonstrated amazing talent from such a young age. Pele was on the team that rose up against all odds to win the World Cup, now that would have been a match to referee!
