WHAT HAVE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS BEEN SO FAR?

For the past 10 months this group has come together to learn Gumbaynggirr dances and songs to perform at the Dance Rite Competition in Sydney in November. They have performed twice so far.  At the Ocean Day at Scotts Head in June and at Bellingen High School in September. One of the dances is the Warrell Creek Dance.

WHY DID YOU APPLY FOR THIS GRANT?

We have been fundraising for our transport, accommodation, costumes and food but we still don’t have enough money for a uniform to wear while we are in Sydney so this is why we are applying. the grant information says it’s to encourage and grow the next generation and to encourage sporting and cultural endeavours. As this is what this group is about, passing on, learning and expressing culture, it seemed like a fitting grant to apply for.

HOW WILL THIS GRANT BENEFIT YOU? AND HOW DO YOU PLAN ON USING IT?

This grant will help us buy a shirt for the group members which will be worn while we are in Sydney and on all occasions when the group performs. The group members have spent time designing a shirt which we will get printed. Having a uniform shirt help each young person feel connected to the group and connected to their culture.

WHAT ARE YOU HOPES AND DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE?

Our hopes are that this group continues to dance together and to learn cultural knowledge and skills together and then to pass it on to younger people who will become members of the group in the future. We hope that he group can dance at festivals and events spreading Gumbaynggirr cultural knowledge and stories to a wide audience.

WHO INSPIRES YOU THE MOST?

Our local elder, storyteller and language man, Michael Jarrett inspires these young people every day. He has taught them Gumbaynggirr language, stories and songs and he is always generous and kind with his knowledge.
